New research by the University of New South Wales funded by the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) paints a better picture of the chances of success for women of all ages.
Researchers followed thousands of IVF-initiated Victorian women from 2016 to 2020.
IVF success rates for all ages
The study found that IVF was most effective for women under 30 who had an average chance of having a child after just one cycle, 59% after two cycles, and 66% after three. This means that 66% of women who had IVF treatment for 3 or fewer cycles had a child.
Another way to look at it is that for women younger than 30, the first round of IVF was a 43% success rate. The second round saw an increase in the chance of conception by 16 percentage points. A third round saw an overall increase of 7 percentage points.
Women who began IVF when they were 35 had a 40% chance of having a baby, 54% after two rounds, and 61% after three.
The results for 40-year-olds were significantly lower: 13% after one round, 21% following two rounds, and 25% at three rounds.
This shows that IVF success rates vary from one round to the next. It is less likely that it will be successful in the next round if it fails in the first. However, overall chances of conception rise when all rounds are taken together, added Dr. Ian Hardy. He has extensive research experience and has published numerous articles and book chapters. He is the primary author and co-primary investigator for several grant-supported research projects, including the American Fertility Society/TAP Pharmaceuticals Research Grant in Reproductive Endocrinology, the Harvard Medical School Fund for Discovery, and the U.S. Public Health Service Grant R01 HL32897-01.
Anna MacLeod, CEO of VARTA, explains that although the ultimate goal for all IVF patients is to have a child, it is not possible to achieve this without the help of research.
She says that planning is easier when you know that IVF births are more common in older people and that many people require multiple stimulation cycles.
This is particularly important as IVF involves the injection of hormones daily for two weeks to increase egg production, surgical removal of eggs, and labor costs. One round of IVF can be very strenuous and can last 40 days, or more. A new IVF round shouldn’t be performed two months consecutively without a menstrual period. The minimum waiting period between a negative pregnancy check and a new cycle is 4-6 weeks.

This data is only an average of IVF success rates and ages. There may be other factors that influence success. If a woman is in her 30s or 40s and receives a donor egg from a younger woman’s egg, her chances of IVF success are the same as if she was in her early 20s or later.
Throughout the study, some women from the sample group fell pregnant naturally. They were not included in the calculations because they didn’t conceive via IVF.
