The Asus TUF Gaming A15 has been around for many years, but Asus has not been satisfied with its most expensive gaming laptop – the company has continued to refine the design and improve the internals.

The 2022 model received faster gear and limited display options in a lighter package than the old machine. That’s a good deal when the rig we reviewed (FA507RM) costs £1,499 in the UK and has a US RRP of $1,499, and the current entry-level model (FA507RE) starts at £1,199. £ or $1,049.

We expect a cheaper SKU to arrive soon, as the Asus site lists the RTX 3050 as an option. There is a lot of competition at the end of the market though, so we need to know if the 2022 Asus TUF Gaming A15 can stand up to competitors like the Acer Nitro 5.

Design and build

  • Have courage inspired by war
  • Poor indoor quality but good lighting
  • Good core integration but no surprises or future plans

The Asus TUF line as a whole doesn’t shy away from its military-inspired design, and that’s still true: the Asus TUF Gaming A15’s casing seems to be wrapped with a strap, and you’ll find useful side vents. many TUF logos. The battle design may not have matured, but Asus doesn’t seem afraid.

You’ll find several TUF physical links on the left side. The TUF has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports, one of which handles DisplayPort, and the left side also has a full USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI output, and audio and Ethernet jacks.

All-day connectivity is fine, but a faster USB port would be better. You get Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth inside, and the TUF has a basic 720p webcam. Surprisingly, there is no fingerprint or card reader. Asus TUF Gaming A15 (2022)

The A15’s second full-size USB port sits halfway down the right side, which is inconvenient if you’re right-handed and use a mouse.

The TUF has an average build quality – there’s flex in the aluminum cover and plastic chassis, though it will survive conventional use. At least the TUF doesn’t take up too much space: its weight of 2.2 kilograms is impressive for a basic laptop and its 25mm body is not ideal.

In fact, the TUF is half a kilo lighter than the Acer, although the Nitro has a faster USB port. Elsewhere, there isn’t much to choose between these two machines.

Keyboard and touchpad

  • The keyboard is fast, clean and powerful
  • Only one area of RGB LED light
  • The trackpad is soft and frustrating

The 15.6-inch body of the Asus TUF Gaming A15 means Asus has room for a number pad and a keyboard with fast, crisp and quiet buttons. They’re good for popular games, but they’re nicer than Nitro’s softkeys.

That’s not to say the A15’s keyboard is perfect. The buttons wobble a bit and the plastic underneath is soft – an expensive machine feels more solid than you’d expect.

The layout isn’t great either: while you have access to the number pad and audio buttons, you have to use a small cursor key and a single high-end back button. And while you get RGB LEDs, it’s a single zone light without a lot of configuration.

The trackpad is large, but the buttons are soft and uncluttered. Even if you are a casual gamer, a USB mouse is better.

Screen and speakers

  • 165Hz refresh rate and 1440p resolution are ideal for mainstream gaming
  • Quality levels are still impressive
  • Tiny and irritating speakers

The 15.6-inch IPS display pairs its 2560 x 1440 resolution with a decent 165Hz refresh rate – both numbers are an upgrade over last year’s laptop.

The screen’s 1283:1 contrast ratio is ample and high enough to provide good levels of depth and punch, and colors are accurate. E of 0.7 is excellent, color temperature of 6,450K is good, and the screen offers 95.7% of the sRGB gamut.

These are great results, they mean your game will be good. This panel is better than the Nitro 5 screen, which suffers from poor quality and gamut coverage.

The only difference here is the maximum brightness level of 308 nits. It is good for indoor use, but not long enough for outdoor use. Also, if you’re an eSports enthusiast, you’ll need a laptop with a 240Hz or 360Hz display – the 165Hz rate of this machine is good for major competitions, but nothing else. The speakers have amazing bass and volume, but the high end is a little thin. They are not allowed if you have no other choice, but a helmet would be better.

Specifications and performance

  • The RTX 3060 handles all major games
  • AMD processors are very good, although compatible Intel chips are better
  • Fan noise is reasonable and the A15 has excellent battery life at times

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 we reviewed ships with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 3060 GPU with a solid 100W power rating.

The processing grunt comes from AMD’s new Ryzen 7 6800H, which has eight cores and a maximum speed of 4.7GHz. Other details make sense: there is 16GB of dual-channel DDR5 memory and a 1TB SSD with daily read and write speeds of 3,145MB/s and 2,072MB/s. The cheapest model will get you the same Ryzen 7 and 16GB of RAM, but keep the GPU and RTX 3050 Ti and cut the SSD in half at 512GB.

TUF’s RT3060 has a higher power envelope than the same GPU in Acer, so it produced better benchmark results: Asus scored 49,215 in 3D Mark Night Raid, while Nitro was 10,000 behind. Unexpectedly, the A15 has a good lead in Far Cry New Dawn: the average Ultra 1080p of 87 fps is five frames higher than its opponent.

Asus did well with its native resolution of 2560 x 1440. The result of this Far Cry is only reduced by five frames, on the laptop 41 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p with ray-tracing and DLSS – and a smooth 68 fps in the middle setting. This machine will run any single player game at 2,560 x 1,440, you’ll only have to raise the resolution on harder titles if you want to hit 60fps average. There’s plenty of potential for eSports too: Asus topped Rainbow Six Siege with an Ultra average of 234fps, so it’ll easily fill a 165Hz screen.

Price and availability

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 is priced at £1,499 in the UK and has an RRP of $1,499 in the US.

It’s not exactly budget-friendly, but if you want to save some money, UK users can pick up an A15 with RTX 3050 Ti graphics, a 512GB SSD and the same specs elsewhere for £1,199 on Amazon or £1,272 from Ebuyer. Meanwhile, US gamers can pick up a $1,049 laptop with an RTX 3050 Ti and a 1080p 144Hz display.

The cheaper UK model offers better value for money thanks to its 165Hz screen and AMD’s best processors, although weaker graphics mean you have to remember the graphics settings and resolutions more often.

If you’re ready to get in there, you can find another A15 option later in 2022: Asus’ website lists RT3070 and RTX 3070 Ti graphics cores with 300Hz display options for electronic games. Verdict

There is much to love about the Asus Tuf to play A122. It can make customer players on a safe screen offering a good performance. A15 even used the battery life and non-sport conditions.

It’s a cheap laptop, so you’re not enough. Its keyboard is good for gaming but the trackpad is bad, its connectivity and quality are poor, and the latest Intel processors are faster than the Ryzen 7 6800H if we have to nitpick.

No laptop will be perfect at this price, however, and the A15 case is not compromised – there is still enough quality here to manage everyday life and it will not be the ultimate gaming laptop with a mediocre trackpad. The Asus TUF Gaming A15 offers excellent performance in several key areas, so it’s a great choice if you want a gaming laptop that won’t break the bank.
